As well as being committed Christians, Chris and Alan own a First Aid and Health & Safety Training Company, which is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and all major nationally accredited Awarding Bodies.
They have run the company for over 10 years and during this time they have trained up over 7,000 people to be first aiders. The number one priority of a first aider is to ‘save lives’, the number one priority of a Christian is to ‘share the gospel’ and therefore to ‘save lives’, albeit in a different way.
Chris and Alan are proud to have trained up so many people as ‘lifesavers’ yet they will never know just how many lives have been saved over the years by the people they have trained up. Now doesn’t that sound familiar?
Chris and Alan used to be Alpha Co-ordinators, successfully running several well attended courses, Alan has also shared his testimony for the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship (FGB) and his testimony can be found in the FGB magazine. As we, as Christians, share our faith during our lives we will never know how many lives will be affected by the sharing of our testimony. We will never know whose life we touch or the impact of what we do. In essence, we will never know just how many lives have been saved.
So, at the end of the day we should do what is right at all times. Many people work hard but not smart. People are well intentioned but make mistakes, which can lead to disaster, tragedy, prosecution, civil litigation and bad publicity. There have been many significant recent changes in the law relating to health and safety. Many, like the far reaching Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 have already impacted negatively on organisations because people either did not know or ignored the law. Recent changes to Ofsted requirements for people in charge of children under 8 years of age also place statutory responsibilities on organisations, for example the need to have staff who are paediatric trained first aiders as well as HSE first aiders. Other examples include charitable organisations which have had to cease providing food for people who are homeless and on the streets because they do not comply with Food Hygiene regulations.
Chris and Alan help organisations to risk assess their core activities and then train up staff and volunteers so they become competent and confident members of the staff. No-one intends to harm someone else, it is always ‘just an accident’. One definition of an accident is ‘an unintended occurrence with an adverse physical affect’ and the problem with the law is that ‘the accident’ could and should have been avoided or at least dealt with correctly by appropriately trained staff!
